Bachelor's of English-Rhetoric Master's of Curriculum and Instruction

Mr. Colin Fleetwood

A bit about me as a professional
HOWDY! My name is Colin Fleetwood and I will be one of the English teachers here at Advantage Academy Grand Prairie East. I went to Texas A&M University and received both my undergraduate degree in English Rhetoric and my master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction. In addition to all of the English Language Arts and Reading material, I am ESL certified, AVID trained, and well versed in many different teaching practices.

A bit about my teaching philosophy
I have been teaching a few years now and I know that I am in the absolute best possible career field on the planet. My goal as a teacher can be boiled down to two simple tasks...

1. Promote in students a thirst for knowledge, critical thinking skills, common sense, and a sense of preparedness for life after the small years of adolescence.

2. Support the emotional, social, and mental well being of any student that walks into my class (or this year, enters my virtual meeting rooms)

I want nothing more or less than the absolute best outcome for ALL of my students and I will fight hard for them to be successful, in and out of the classroom. Yes, I will be teaching reading, writing, and other academic skills. However, being a teacher is so much more than just "How to Write an Essay in 10 Easy Steps." The WHOLE student must be accounted for. That is now, and will always be, my aim.

A bit about my class and teaching style
My goal in class will always be to serve the WHOLE student. I try to lead a very discussion oriented classroom. I have found that this leads to the students discovering new ideas organically, rather than being spoon-fed answers. I always try to incorporate reading (specifically novels) when at all possible into every aspect of my class. Not only does this expose students to new literature, but it ensures students can take pride in the fact that they more than one book in a year, a feat that fewer and fewer adults can brag about.

However, I think the most important part of my class will be the written portions. I believe in having students write something every single day. I believe that every single person on this planet has the ability to write beautiful, eloquent works. Some just need the proper guidance to do so, which I will be doing my best to provide. I will expect that my students write in various styles and about various topics. I educate students in professional, creative, and introspective writing. My goal is to have students have a wide range of writing skills and styles at their disposal, as well as the knowledge of when to use each of these skills.
