• Introducing Our Schools - In Our Own Words

Posted by Advantage Academy on 8/4/2021 9:00:00 AM

Advantage Academy is a PK-12 tuition-free public charter school, founded in 1998. We have four campuses throughout the Dallas area in North Duncanville/SW Dallas, Grand Prairie (2), and Waxahachie. Although they all share the same mission and passion for educating tomorrow’s Champions, each school has a unique history, identity and spirit.

To learn more, we asked our four Head Principals to tell us what they value most about their schools.

  • Accelerated Learning: Helping Students Catch Up after the Pandemic

Posted by Advantage Academy on 7/28/2021 9:00:00 AM

Dr. Angela McDonald, Superintent of Advantage Academy

COVID-19 presented many challenges to learning for students across our country. As we prepare for the 2021-2022 school year, Advantage Academy teachers and administrators have been working hard to develop strategies to counteract learning loss. This week we asked our Superintendent, Dr. Angela McDonald, to share more about the plans at Advantage Academy. Here's what she had to say:

“We are currently creating plans to make significant changes in order to catch kids up after a difficult year for many students and families. We are committed to providing the best, most effective strategies and additional support that are needed for students who were not successful this past year, due to COVID-19. We are implementing accelerated learning strategies, including high-impact tutoring, the addition of learning coaches, and additional support staff to ensure that all students are able to learn in a champion culture, with a focus on improving literacy and math skills for all students.

Our high-impact tutoring for students this coming school year will ensure that all students who need this support will receive small group instruction with highly trained tutors. Some of this tutoring will be during the school day and some may be either directly before or after school.

Our goal is to have a consistent tutor for each group of students so that these tutors can build great relationships with each of our students throughout the school year.  The tutoring sessions will be built around each students’ strengths and areas of need with targeted support and individualized instruction. We will use rigorous materials designed to make up for lost learning and that meets the needs of our students and any learning gaps they may have.

We are also using a new highly effective research-based curriculum and teacher development program that is 100% approved and supported by the Texas Education Agency. We were one of the few schools this past year and during our 2021 summer school that piloted this new curriculum. There will be ongoing support and training for our teachers to ensure effective instruction is happening in classes, especially in reading and math.

We are also making improvements to ensure that any student who has struggled socially and emotionally is provided the support they need. We are adding additional counselors and counseling resources to our programs. We are adding a beginning of the day period that we are calling our CAPSTONE period. This will provide students with time to learn new social and life skills. And we are adding a new facilitator for family and community engagement, to encourage more effective communication and to guarantee our classrooms are filled with happy and positive students and staff, while ensuring that everyone is learning and growing academically, socially and emotionally.

We are excited about the changes that we are able to make for this upcoming school year, and we believe they will have a positive and lasting impact on our students and families.”

  • 7 Things to Know About Our Robust STEM Curriculum

Posted by Advantage Academy on 7/21/2021 9:00:00 AM

“I plan to attend Texas A&M University to obtain a Biomedical Science degree. I want to say, thank you to all of my Advantage Academy teachers who helped me so much this year.” - Alma S., Advantage Academy graduate

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math. Most public schools teach basic math and science, but many do not provide their students with opportunities to learn about engineering, or give them free access to technology. How do we do it? Here are 7 things to know!

    1. STEM is the future!

A solid foundation in STEM education creates critical thinkers and inspires the next generation of innovators and problem solvers. AA STEM classes encourage teamwork, experimentation and creativity – essential skills for success!

    2. STEM is for all learners!

At AA, we incorporate STEM curriculum into every grade level, from pre-k hands-on learning about plants and animals, to high school forensic science coursework and math and science competitions. Students are exposed to STEM ideas throughout the school day.

    3. We take STEM out of the classroom!

AA Eagles connect what they are learning in the classroom with real-world applications, through field trips, mentoring programs, internships, and more.

    4. Technology is accessible and free!

All AA Eagles, Pre-K-12, enjoy a no-fee technology device checkout program, which includes access to Chromebooks, iPads, and other laptops.

    5.  We offer technology training!

Our 6th, 7th and 8th graders can elect to enroll in technology and digital media courses that enhance their regular curriculum.

    6. We help our STEM students pursue their passions!

AA high school students can choose electives in Technology, Engineering, Computer Technology and Robotics.

    7.  We support tomorrow’s leaders!

AA offers a CTE endorsement in STEM, which gives students the opportunity to earn a prestigious CTE Pathway Endorsement on their diplomas and become more marketable in their college or career search.

  • The 7 Pillars of Character and Leadership: Building Champions from Within

Posted by Advantage Academy on 6/23/2021 9:00:00 AM

Visitors to our campus often ask us what sets us apart from other schools -  what inspires an Advantage Academy Champion? The answer is our ability to teach to the whole child - mind, body and spirit. And at the core of that is our commitment to the 7 Pillars of Character and Leadership.

    Character is in Everyone

“Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.” (Abraham Lincoln)

Character is the very essence of a human being. It is what shapes good followers and good leaders. It’s the moral compass by which we conduct our lives - and it’s not set in stone. Character can be developed, and at Advantage Academy we are teaching students how to do just that.

    Character Bulletin Board

    What are the 7 Pillars?

The 7 Pillars of Character and Leadership represent the skills that we strive to instill in our students at all grade levels. These traits give them the tools, abilities, and confidence to make a difference within themselves and the world around them - as Champions in every stage of their lives.

     Integrity

Having strong moral values and showing consistent character even when no one is watching.

    Humility

Showing a modest view of oneself, seeing the importance of others, and being willing to learn and grow.

    Authority

Being a leader that is willing to serve in order to support the team, with both confidence and humility.

    Stability

Having a firm purpose and consistently working towards that purpose with perseverance.

    Community

Belonging to a group of people linked by a common goal or purpose, empowered with knowledge and the skills needed to effect change for a shared interest.

    Prosperity

A healthy state of mind, body and spirit.

    Victory

Achieving success by overcoming opposition and difficulties.

    7 Pillars inside our Classrooms...

AA students learn about the 7 Pillars as a part of our school’s everyday culture - they are ingrained into our daily lessons and in the language of our classrooms. We feature a district-wide Pillar of the Month that is supported by ongoing enrichment in all grades.

New in 2021-22, we are creating a daily “7 Pillars of Character and Leadership Period” to focus on skill building. Each student in K-8 will benefit from age-appropriate curriculum that examines each trait in depth and applies it to their lives.

    ...and Outside our School Walls

AA classrooms aren’t the only place for our students to practice the 7 Pillars. Our coaches use them in working with their players - encouraging student athletes to be respectful with coaches, teammates and officials.

The 7 Pillars also extend into our community. Each year we partner with local nonprofits and businesses to send our students out to serve - developing empathy and humility while addressing real-life community needs. Current partnering agencies include Heart & Home Ministries, the Salvation Army, the YMCA, and many more.

Contact us today to find out more about how the 7 Pillars are creating Champions at Advantage Academy!

  • Reaching All Learners

Posted by Advantage Academy on 6/16/2021 9:00:00 AM

“Educate and inform the whole mass of the people...they are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty.”

    - Thomas Jefferson

At Advantage Academy, we believe that every student deserves a high-quality education. But what does that mean for students with diverse learning styles and abilities? How do we reach all learners? It starts with recognizing that one size doesn’t fit all when teaching children.

    504-IEP Image

    Special Education

AA Special Education is tailored to meet the needs of students who need extra support. We offer a tiered structure of services, similar to a “traditional” public school. AA has effective solutions to support each student’s success at every stage of their education.

AA offers support services based on Multi-Tier System of Supports (MTSS) and Response to Intervention (RTI) learning models. These data-driven models were developed by the National Center for Learning Disabilities to transform schools and help all students succeed. They empower families to be engaged as partners in their children’s learning. They also set standards for curriculum and instruction– standards that we use in assessing the effectiveness of our programs.

For students who qualify, AA can implement a Section 504 accommodation plan or IEP to support their learning. A parent or guardian may request an assessment for special education or Section 504 services at any time. We also offer many resources to help families learn more about the services that are available to their children. Simply contact our Special Education staff to get started.

    Online Tutoring

AA partners with FEV Tutor to offer individualized tutoring instruction for Special Education students, including students on 504 plans and IEPs. This 1:1, online instruction supports the unique needs of each student through a curriculum that reflects their IEP goals, and with instructors that work at each student’s individual pace.

    Summer Champion Camp

By invitation only, AA offers an engaging summer learning camp for students who struggled in either reading, math or both during the school year. Targeted instruction along with art, games, and physical activities make our camp fun and prepare students for a successful return to school in the fall. In most years, AA also offers credit recovery for our high school students and other students such as English Language Learners

    English Language Learners (ELLs)

According to a recent Stanford University study, Charter Schools are doing a better job of educating ELLs than “traditional” public schools. AA’s English Language Program is leading the way with innovative and effective resources that support our students as they develop speaking, writing, listening and reading skills in English. ELL students receive instruction by classroom teachers as well as pull-out services by our ESL specialists.

    Gifted & Talented

The AA Gifted and Talented program supports high performing students in grades 3-6 with a variety of services, including:

    • Differentiated curriculum in reading and math
    • Science and social studies extensions
    • Independent and cooperative study projects
    • Summer learning opportunities

Students are identified and nominated by teachers or parents, and screened in the spring semester. Nomination forms are in English and Spanish and can be submitted at any time during the school year.

  • School Sports - Building Champions On and Off the Field

Posted by Advantage Academy on 6/2/2021 9:00:00 AM

Advantage Academy was founded 23 years ago by educators who believed in the value of character development and leadership. Today, you can walk into any of our schools and find those very same values evident in our classrooms and hallways, in the Champions Pledge that our students recite each morning, and in our motto: “Building Champions with a Future and a Hope”.

But our commitment to student success doesn’t stop at our four walls. Advantage Academy builds Champions on our playing fields, tracks and courts. Team sports include flag football, basketball, softball, volleyball, baseball, cheerleading, tennis and track, and are offered based on student interest. Our athletic programs inspire life skills and give kids a foundation for success that they can bring back to the classroom and into their futures.

    Balanced Coaching

Advantage Academy coaches are also teachers or staff at our schools. They know the student athletes well and have trusted relationships with their families. Our coaches use the 7 Pillars of Character and Leadership in working with their players - the same components that are emphasized throughout our school curriculum and culture. The 7 Pillars represent an approach to teaching character that is grounded in integrity - encouraging student athletes to be honest and respectful with coaches, teammates, and officials.

    Building Social Skills

Sports help students learn essential tools for getting along with others, respecting authority, and effective communication. These are skills they can use for the rest of their lives, while gaining the benefits of healthy physical activity!

    Friendly Competition

Students of all ages can benefit from learning how to effectively manage competition. Advantage Academy sports programs advocate discipline and humility and work with students to make competition healthy and fun for every player, regardless of their skill level. It’s very common for opposing team coaches and parents to comment on the excellent sportsmanship of Advantage Academy players. They are amazed at how respectful and encouraging they are with their teammates, regardless of the score.

Our athletic program offers opportunities for students of all skill levels to try out the sports that interest them, even if they’ve never played before. • Life After High School: Advantage Academy Prepares Students for Success

Posted by Advantage Academy on 5/26/2021 10:00:00 AM

The teenage years move quickly, and without support it can be easy for students to find themselves without a plan after high school. Even the most diligent learners can be stymied by the many paths that are available to them. Complicated application processes required by employers, schools and the military are often challenging to navigate for students and families alike.

At Advantage Academy we are dedicated to preparing our students for lifelong success. We offer a variety of resources and support to help each student chart a path after high school that can include college, career, or military service.

“I plan to attend Texas A&M University to obtain a Biomedical Science degree. I want to say, thank you to all of my Advantage Academy teachers who helped me so much this year.” - Alma S. Advantage Academy graduate

We Lay the Groundwork for Success

Advantage Academy gives all students a foundation of academic excellence starting in the earliest grades. We teach students how to set goals and achieve them, both inside and outside the classroom. For struggling students, we offer free tutoring and weekly mentoring services to help them successfully graduate with a vision for their future.

Beginning in 8th grade, Advantage Academy champions learn about the options awaiting them after high school. Our students and families set goals around college, career or military service, and learn the steps necessary to achieve these goals. The district guidance counselor supplies information on college admission, financial aid, and exam preparation as well as military information.

We Help Students Take their First Steps

Staying on track with college admissions, job applications or military recruitment can be difficult. At Advantage Academy we support our students with a variety of readiness activities.

    • We encourage college-bound seniors to apply for admission to at least 2 colleges or universities.
    • We assist seniors planning to pursue a career in the military in completing the ASVAB and speaking with a recruiter of their choice.
    • We help seniors who plan to go straight into the workforce after graduation to complete a career/interest inventory and support them in submitting at least one job application.
    • We require students to participate in college readiness assessments, beginning in 8th grade. This includes NWEA, PSAT/NMQST, ACT or SAT, TSI or Edgenuity Equivalent Readiness assessment.

We Give Students a Head Start

Advantage Academy students can begin building their futures before they graduate.

    • Career and Technical Education courses (CTE) - are designed to prepare students with the technical and professional skills necessary to succeed in an occupational environment. Students have the opportunity to select various Programs of Study, and can earn college credit, industry level training, certifications, and internships while still in high school. CTE courses encourage students to develop a personal career plan and provide information for post-secondary education opportunities. Advantage Academy offers CTE Programs of Study in Business and Industry and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). After meeting course requirements, students can earn a prestigious CTE Pathway Endorsement on their diplomas, becoming more marketable in their college or career search.
    • Internships with local businesses - each year Advantage Academy partners with area businesses to support our students with internships. Students can choose from a variety of industries, including accounting, graphic design, manufacturing, and more.
    • Free college credit - for 10th-12th grade students who qualify, Advantage Academy offers the opportunity to earn high school and college credit at the same time through dual credit courses. We are proud to partner with Dallas County Community College (Mountain View location) and Texas State Technical College for dual credit classes. Tuition at either college is free, and textbooks are provided at no charge to students.

    We Celebrate Success

We love staying connected with our Advantage Academy champions! Our graduates go on to achieve their goals and do amazing things in our community. Advantage Academy alumni are invited to return to campus and share their successes with our current students, inspiring them to dream big!
