ELAR (English, Language Arts, Reading)
In K - 12, all students are able to strengthen their literacy skills through seven strands:
- Developing and sustaining foundational language skills
- Comprehension
- Response
- Multiple genres
- Author's purpose and craft
- Composition
- Inquiry and research.
Daily lessons utilize shared, interactive, guided, and independent practice to meet a diverse range of learning styles. Students' individual interests and abilities are considered when selecting novels and writing topics.
Advantage Academy is also taking part in the Texas Covid Recovery Instructional Support Initiative, brought to us through Texas Home Learning 4.0 (CRIMSI).
ELAR HIGHLIGHTS K-3
Teacher-Led Whole-Class Mini-Lessons: Work with your teacher and friends in weekly questions, themes, and genres. Read aloud and discuss various themes from the weekly reading.
Reading and Writing Workshops: Read like a writer and write for a reader. Teachers lead workshops to help you become a confident reader and writer. Learn how to spell, write, publish your work, and even improve handwriting skills.
Partner Reading and Independent Reading: Read books at your own pace, interest, and at your reading level. Books are available both in class and online by using a leveled reader tablet app.
Book Club and Literacy Workstations: Choose the book that goes along with your curriculum unit. With your collaborated book club, ask questions about the author and discuss the text with your peers. Literacy workstations are both independent and collaborative.
Word Work: Practice words that you learn both interactively online and in class. Digital games are an optional practice that you can do on your tablet.
Intro to Reading (Grades K - 5) A literacy curriculum that inspires curiosity and drives results, empowering all students with rich background knowledge.
Intro to Literature (Grades 6 - 11) A literacy curriculum that builds confidence, standards mastery, and college and career readiness for every learner in the classroom.
ELAR HIGHLIGHTS 4-12
Anchor Chart: Create a poster used to “anchor” the learning of a particular concept. An anchor chart contains relevant information about an objective and is displayed for review and reference.
Reader’s Notebook: Record multiple reflections, connections, thoughts, and responses to literary and informational texts.
Reading Log: Keep track of the texts you have read and the time spent reading.
Writer’s Notebook: Work through the writing process in a notebook or folder. The writer's notebook will have evidence of generating ideas, planning, drafting, revising comma, and editing. Publishing is done outside of the writer's notebook.
Independent Reading: Read a self-selected text that is at your own independent reading level.

ELAR BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
Personalized Learning Pathways: In Grades K - 12, students are given a learning pathway to increase their literacy skills. Pathways are individualized, online learning interventions through the following systems:
Literacy Mobile Carts: The carts are available for students for self-selected and independent reading. Books can be checked out to be taken home by the students.
Novel Studies and Book Clubs: To enhance the reading experience in every grade, novel studies have been added to the curriculum to encourage reading and exploration of favorite authors and other areas of interest. Students have the opportunity to participate in book clubs, literature circles, and readers’ workshops to discuss published works for the unit.
Texas Reads One Book Event: Each year, elementary students are invited to participate in a statewide reading event to encourage reading at home each night.
Online Library: In partnership with local and state libraries, Advantage Academy has a wealth of resources for students to access books, ebooks, research databases, and online periodicals.
