History Matters at Advantage Academy

At Advantage Academy we build champions through character development and inspired purpose. Our Founder, Dr. Allen Beck, envisioned a faith and family-friendly curriculum, grounded in the principles of our Founding Fathers – the heroes who crafted the moral, religious and constitutional foundation upon which America was built.

“The smiles of heaven can never be expected on a nation which disregards the eternal rules of order and right which heaven itself has ordained.” (George Washington)

A Curriculum Steeped in History

Our faculty, staff and students are proud of our heritage as Americans, and we take care to infuse the lessons of American history into every grade’s curriculum. Here’s how.

Social Studies – a Valued Foundation

Our Social Studies curriculum helps young people make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world. At Advantage Academy, we value Social Studies as important in the foundational development of leadership, character, and citizenship.

We affirm America’s historical figures and leaders who have demonstrated inspirational leadership qualities and model the desire for a positive, happy, and successful future, such as Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Social studies at Advantage Academy encompasses citizenship, history, geography, economics, government, culture, technology, and society.

  • K-2: Curriculum centers on what it means to be a responsible member of your school, family, and community.
  • 3-5: Students practice problem solving, decision making, and independent thinking skills.
  • 6-12: Students learn the importance of patriotism, the basic democratic values of our state and nation, and explore other cultures and societies around the world.

Milestone Project on American History

Each semester, students in all grades work on a “Milestone Project” – a closer look into facts and concepts regarding American History and the Founding Fathers. Distinguished work is recognized with a certificate and medal at the end of each year.

Teaching the Bible through the Lens of History

Bible literacy and Judeo-Christian history, culture and values are prized components of the Advantage Academy curriculum. Students learn about religion from a historical perspective, through the study of American history and literature. We offer an optional Bible elective for high school students who choose to learn more about Christian History.

History Comes Alive Outside the Classroom

At Advantage Academy, the values and lessons of American history don’t stop at the classroom door. Our students enjoy many opportunities to extend their learning through on- and off-campus activities.

Annual Observations and Celebrations

Our Thanksgiving Lunch is a highlight of our school year, and a valued tradition for Advantage Academy families. Each November, grandparents, parents and siblings are invited to attend a celebration of our American history, with special presentations and performances by students and guests. Elementary students read George Washington’s 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation, which marked the first national celebration of this cherished American holiday. It’s not to be missed!

Each September we celebrate “Constitution Day” with activities to educate and celebrate the adoption of the United States Constitution. Each January we commemorate “Religious Freedom Day” on the anniversary of the 1786 Virginia Statute on Religious Freedom, which served as the model for protecting religious freedom in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Students also study and prepare special presentations throughout the year to observe the important contributions of our diverse American population, including Black History Month and Hispanic History Day.

American History Field Trip

Each year Advantage Academy High School sophomores have the opportunity to take a “Drive Through History” course using David Barton’s curriculum resources from WallBuilders. In this course, students examine the American beliefs and its principles of citizenship that exemplify character, morals, and ethics. The semester includes a popular capstone field trip to Alvado, Texas, to tour the Wallbuilders’ Collection Museum, which houses one of the largest collections of Founding Era artifacts in the United States.

Honoring Heroes

The Wall of Photos at Advantage Academy showcases leaders that represent the rich diversity of our American roots. Our current display includes the founding members of the first Congressional Black Caucus, which students learn about in their Social Studies curriculum.

Students of all ages are invited to join our new Advantage Academy Flag Club, which teaches the history, symbolism, and honored tradition behind our national flag. Students learn how to fold the flag and conduct daily flag raising and lowering ceremonies. Our “See You at the Pole” event each September is a day for students around the world to meet at their flagpoles to pray for their schools.
